"Full programme, great team"

“Negotiations with South-American business partners, the drafting of research contracts with the scientific community, breakfast in the Skylounge, the preparation of supervisory board meetings – what sounds like the life of a director of a major German stock corporation was our daily routine at Oppenhoff & Partner.

Six weeks’ practical training meant a full programme, great diversity, responsibility for one’s own activities and a truly great team. The summer university was divided into two sections, each section giving students the chance to familiarise themselves with a particular practice area. My choices were IT&C and Aerospace & Defence, where I gained an insight into large-scale supply contracts, was allowed to participate in a due diligence and was able to revise IT contracts in a team with experienced colleagues. In the second key area, M&A, my team’s work concentrated on the overhauling and adaptation of the corporate structure of a major German automotive enterprise and the pertaining legal issues. Additionally, a diversity of events was offered on an almost daily basis, such as English lessons, rhetoric training, vocational legal lectures and negotiation simulations. A particular highlight in this connection was the litigation moot court and the M&A simulation.

The law firm really looked after us, be this during the firm’s office outing to Maastricht, at the regular Monday lunches or through the use of its perfectly equipped library. The aim of such a practical training course, to give students an insight into a future job, was accomplished in full by the summer university and also gave us a real taste of what it’s like to work as a commercial lawyer.”
