Georg Maier-Reimer’s 70th birthday
Press Release 26 November 2010
Dr. Dr. hc. Georg Maier-Reimer is one of those lawyers who has the ability to excellently combine his extensive academic interests with his practical work as a lawyer and to make the best use of the correlations between the two areas.
Having studied law at the Universities of Lausanne, Munich, Bonn and Tübingen (Dr. jur.) and subsequently completed an academic year at Harvard with an LL.M., Maier-Reimer joined the Cologne law firm of Boden Oppenhoff & Schneider in 1968. Over the following decades he was to become one of Germany’s leading commercial lawyers and substantially contributed towards defining the fortunes of his firm. His influence is also intrinsically linked to the shift in the work undertaken by lawyers in the field of commercial law and their orientation towards international business. He significantly influenced the firm’s expansion and increasingly international networking, the creation of one of the first supraregional German law firms and its subsequent integration into a major international law firm. Today, he is one of the senior partners of the commercially oriented law firm of Oppenhoff & Partner in Cologne, which he co-founded in the year 2008.
Characteristic of Georg Maier-Reimer is his keen interest in all aspects of commercial law, even beyond his areas of expertise in finance, M&A and corporate law, as well as his evident pleasure in solving complex problems and his energetic dedication to any tasks he takes on. In addition to his work as a lawyer, he has commented in numerous publications and contributed to discussions on legal issues within his sphere of interest, but also on professional issues and general topics. Further proof of his academic standard is his functions as co-editor of the Neue Juristische Wochenschrift and as co-editor and commentator of the new edition of the Ermansche Kommentar zum BGB. He was awarded an honorary doctorate for his academic services by the University of Cologne in 2004.
A description of Maier-Reimer’s work would not be complete without mentioning his involvement on national and international professional bodies that deal with legal developments and proposed legislation. As Chairman of the Civil Law Committee of the German Bar Association (DAV), he accompanied the reform of the law of obligations with a critical yet positive approach. Already prior thereto, yet with greater intensity after joining the Commercial Law Committee of the DAV, he has addressed questions relating to commercial and corporate law, and contributed to the discussion on the particularly lively legal developments in this area. At an international level, he was involved on committees of the International Bar Association and was Chairman of the International Legal Relations Working Group of the DAV in the 90s.
“Georg Maier-Reimer exudes energy, whether he is working on a case, discussing questions of law or cycling down the Rhine. He is known for his alert mind, keen perception, precision in his analysis and expression, his open and friendly approach and his personal modesty.” said Michael Oppenhoff, spokesman of Oppenhoff & Partner.
Maier-Reimer will be celebrating his 70th birthday on 30 November 2010. His partners and many guests will be commemorating this event on 3 December 2010 at a ceremony to be held in Cologne.
